There is nothing better to eat than, a home-grown tomato straight from the garden or a honeydew melon purchased from a local farmer. The fruits and vegetables just taste better in summer! However, there are hidden dangers in consuming too much of a good thing. Too much potassium consumption can cause hyperkalemia in hemodialysis patients. Hyperkalemia can be life-threatening. It can cause irregular heartbeats and sudden death without warning (National Kidney Foundation, 2020). Potassium is found in many fruits and vegetables. Cantaloupe, peaches, honeydew, prunes, and nectarines are just some fruit that contains higher amounts of potassium. Along with tomatoes, squash, collard greens and many more vegetables. Of course, one can have these summer treats in moderation. The trick is to measure what you eat and monitor how often you are eating certain fruits and vegetables.
